On March 24, 2026, Argentina witnessed the largest street protests in a decade against the government. Thousands of people across the country, including the capital, expressed their disagreement with the ruling administration's policies. A torchlight march in Buenos Aires and other cities capped off a series of massive demonstrations showcasing the strength and unity of the opposition. By Pablo Solana.

Mass Mobilization Against Government in Argentina

Once again, the decisive battles are taking place on the streets. March 24, 2026. This is a wonderful people. It is hard to understand how this band of proto-fascists that governs us managed to impose themselves, but days like yesterday make it clear that their victory is temporary. This reinforces the assessment: during these days, the cycle of mobilizations most powerful and challenging to the current government took place, going beyond the commemoration. March 24, 2026. Photography: Andrés Manrique After a historic day like yesterday, a double challenge remains: to assess the very healthy and necessary popular vitality for taking to the streets, an indication that, even at the most critical moment, they have not defeated us nor will they defeat us. Squares and streets across the country were taken over by thousands of expressions of popular culture, hundreds of thousands of families, trade union organizations, parties, and the most diverse groups, with conviction, clear banners, and crowds everywhere. This was crowned by a massive Torchlight March, as happened in San Telmo, Lugano, Almagro, Montserrat, Balvanera, or Villa Crespo, and outside the city, in San Justo or La Plata. March 24, 2026. Despite the blows, we are still millions in the struggle. To mention the local case: in La Boca, the Week of Memory was actually two weeks, from the 12th to the 23rd, and more than 20 activities were held, from rallies in plazas to painting handkerchiefs with children from schools, book and film presentations, solidarity events, and peñas for Memory: in every community space, there was agitation, debate, and participation. We will have to see what we will do next, but it is certain that we are going to defeat them. Source: https://x.com/pablo_fierro/status/2036803641072353533 Due to the content of the slogans, and because it is clear that the greater participation compared to previous years is in response to Mileiism, both for its pro-dictatorship discourse and for the economic situation and social discontent. There is still a long way to go, but yesterday an important step was taken, we are on the right path. By Pablo Solana. 1. And at the same time, to take note that this is not enough, that we will have to know how to transform this massive anger into organization and the organization into the capacity to fight not only to mark the territory, as happened yesterday, but also to make them retreat, to have to leave, so that they can no longer advance against the popular will. The journalist @MatiMow asked on his X account at 9 PM on the 24th, “photos or videos of the march in your cities or towns,” and received more than 200 posts from different corners of the country. Nearly 200,000 people in Córdoba Capital, another multitude in Rosario, large marches in each provincial capital, and also significant ones in other localities. Regarding the ideological dispute over March 24, the mobilized people protagonized a historic victory over negationism and did so in the streets more than in debates on social networks, something similar to what happened during Macriism with the popular reaction against the “2x1” for genocides. It is worth highlighting: the Plaza de Mayo was packed on Monday the 23rd, and not just the Plaza, the entire center of the city overflowed with people on the 24th: a dozen avenues crowded with rivers of people flowing all day, until late into the night. If someone were to say that between the 23rd and 24th there was a million people mobilized just in CABA, they would not be exaggerating. March 24, 2026. Yesterday's victory in the mobilization will not have its immediate counterpart, however, in the central fight against the government, for two main reasons. “There is a widespread feeling that, in all the places where marches were held, this was the most powerful and numerous mobilization of, at least, the last 10 years,” the communicator concluded. The period he mentions spans from Macri to the present, leaving open the possibility that there were more numerous marches during the Kirchnerist cycle. But there were also hundreds of activities the previous week in cities, towns, and neighborhoods across the country. But the truth is that we are now in a context of reactionary violence exercised by the State, due to policies that strongly hit the people and chronic repression. I say “during these days” because it was not just the 24th, and the mobilizations went far beyond the vigil the day before. On the other hand, the essential popular mobilization showed its strength in a day that confronted ideologically but was not subject to the grappling of the most decisive junctures, as happened with the approval of the Labor Reform. The people demonstrated that they are willing to manifest against this regime, but at the same time, they distrust, do not dare, or do not see the conditions for confrontation when on the other side they have water cannons and rubber bullets to face any attempt at social resistance. March 24, 2026. March 24, 2026. On the one hand, because no one challenges the “top-down” capacity that Mileiism, as an expression of economic power, has demonstrated to advance against the people; they advance with ultra-reactionary laws and won midterm elections based on the uselessness of the rest of the politicians who should be the opposition and alternative. In this context, more than in others, every participation in events and mobilizations was commemorative but at the same time a clear confrontation with the current government.
