The Minister of Deregulation and Government Transformation, Federico Sturzenegger, announced changes in the procedures for obtaining a Driver's License in Argentina. License renewal will no longer be mandatory upon turning 65; instead, it will be extended every five years.
To obtain a driver's license for the first time, several prerequisites must be met, such as a medical examination (vision, psychological, and general health assessment), demonstrating residency in the jurisdiction with the DNI, completing a traffic education course, and presenting the CENAT. The cost and procedures may vary depending on the province.
Sturzenegger mentioned that no theoretical or practical exams will be required for renewal if the document has not expired in the last year. Additionally, he announced a comprehensive reform of the Traffic Code, which will include significant updates in the coming days.
People over 65 will still need to renew their driver's licenses annually, and if applying for the first time, they will need to do so in person. The procedure will depend on each province, but efforts will be made to streamline the process to prevent it from becoming a method of revenue collection by municipalities.
For renewal, it is important that the applicant starts the process well in advance to avoid the card expiring. Those under 65 may renew their license every five years, while its validity will depend on the category and age of the person.
Non-professional driver's licenses will no longer have an expiration date, but it will be mandatory to present a sworn statement, a physical fitness certificate, and a medical certificate every five years through an electronic platform. Medical and theoretical exams will continue to be part of the process.
The requirements for renewing the driver's license focus on the physical and psychological fitness of the driver, as well as appropriate vision and hearing requirements. Starting at 75 years of age, annual renewal will be mandatory to ensure road safety.
