Argentina Reports Over 800 Whooping Cough Cases This Year

Argentina's Ministry of Health reported 81 new cases of whooping cough during epidemiological week 49. The total number of confirmed cases for 2025 now stands at 846, with cases present in 21 jurisdictions. The highest concentration of cases is in the Central Region, primarily in the Province of Buenos Aires (439 cases) and the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (83). The subgroup of children under 6 months was particularly affected, with 208 registered cases. Regarding fatalities, the National Epidemiological Bulletin (BEN) reported seven deaths associated with whooping cough, all without a history of vaccination. Four of the deceased were under 6 months old, one was between 6 and 11 months, and two were in the 12 to 23-month age group. The bulletin emphasizes that vaccination remains the primary preventive measure and recommends strengthening vaccination campaigns, targeting pregnant women, infants, and young children. As for other diseases, 518 suspected dengue cases were notified last week, with no confirmed cases. The report also notes the continued circulation of respiratory viruses like SARS-CoV-2, influenza, and RSV, though at low levels.
