Guillermo Tabanera, General Manager of ESPN & Disney Latin America, has announced his retirement from corporate life after 32 years of career to embark on a new stage in his life. During his time at the company, he played a key role in transforming Disney into a giant in the production of sports content in the region.
Diego Lerner, president of The Walt Disney Company Latin America, was the one who communicated the announcement to the company’s employees. In his words, "It is not easy to let go of someone who has defined in such a significant way the foundation, evolution, and development of ESPN in the region." Lerner highlighted Tabanera's strategic vision in understanding how the sports component would play a central role in the value proposition for customers.
ESPN, recognized by athletes and fans of various disciplines, features SportsCenter as one of its most prominent emblems and produces 65,000 hours of content each year in different formats that reach 100 million people per month. Disney owns more than 60% of the market of sports signals by pay television operator, including channels like Fox Sports, ESPN, and ESPN Extra, in addition to having a contract with AFA to broadcast Argentine football.
In Argentina, Disney employs more than 3,000 people directly, with another 2,800 performing tasks indirectly for the company. Tabanera’s legacy in the expansion and consolidation of ESPN in the region highlights his contribution to the sports and entertainment landscape in Latin America.
