The national government has once again postponed a portion of the increases in taxes on liquid fuels and carbon dioxide established in Law 23.966, as reported by the Argentine News Agency based on Decree 74/2026, published today in the Official Gazette.
This norm modifies Decree 617/2025 and its subsequent amendments, which had set the entry into force of the remaining increases of these taxes, derived from the 2024 updates and the first three quarters of 2025 for gasoline and diesel fuel, for February 1, 2026.
With the new decree, the Executive Branch orders that these increases be applied partially and staggeredly, with the objective of "continuing to stimulate the growth of the economy through a sustainable fiscal path" regarding unleaded gasoline, virgin gasoline, and diesel fuel.
For taxable events that are perfected between February 1 and 28, 2026, the norm sets an increase in the updated fixed amount of the tax on liquid fuels of $16,773 per liter for the different types of gasoline and $14,372 for diesel fuel, while raising the tax on carbon dioxide by $1,027 for gasoline and $1,638 for diesel fuel.
In the case of the differential treatment for diesel fuel destined for consumption in Patagonia, Malargüe, and Patagones, a specific increase of $7,782 is also determined in the updated fixed amount of the levy contemplated in article 7, section d) of Law 23.966.
The decree also replaces in article 1 of Decree 617/2025 the entry into force date for the full application of the increases, which is moved from February 1 to March 1, 2026, thus extending the schedule for the pending increases by one more month.
This measure, signed by President Javier Milei; the Chief of Cabinet, Manuel Adorni; and the Minister of Economy, Luis Caputo, will be in effect as of February 1, 2026, inclusive, according to the official text accessed by the Argentine News Agency.
