Salta Governor Opposes Worker Wage Reduction

The governor of Salta, Gustavo Sáenz, announced that deputies from Innovation Federal, Independence, and I Choose Catamarca will support the amendment to Article 208 of the Labor Contract Law, as planned in the labor reform. The Salta governor justified the decision by the need to protect workers' incomes. The issue concerns a proposal to reduce wages by 50% or 75% in cases of accidents and illnesses unrelated to work, as stipulated in Article 44 of the bill. Sáenz was firm in stating that 'no one chooses to have an accident or get sick.' Therefore, the legal framework must act as a safeguard, not as an economic punishment in times of physical vulnerability. The governor emphasized that the political leadership 'has the responsibility and obligation to provide guarantees and certainty with this new law, at all costs avoiding generating uncertainty and anxiety among workers.' Article 44 of the bill states that employees with accidents or illnesses unrelated to work would receive only 50% or 75% of their earnings. In this regard, the governor stressed: 'If it was a mistake, the most just and prudent thing is to correct it, and even better, to eliminate it.' Finally, Sáenz urged to seek consensus to strengthen the Argentine labor system based on justice and equity, and reiterated that his role and that of his representatives in the National Congress is to look out for the interests of the people of Salta and all workers in the country, ensuring that every change in legislation represents an advance in building trust and not a setback in social protection.
