Mendoza Governor Backs Impeachment Against Judge Whose Decisions Led to Crime Surge

The governor of Mendoza, Alfredo Cornejo, supported the decision of the Jury of Impeachment to proceed with the political trial against Judge Sebastián Sarmiento and sharply questioned his performance, considering that his judicial decisions had serious consequences in terms of security. The statements were made during a press conference within the framework of the last meeting of the year of the Consultative Council of Private Activity, where the provincial leader referred to the institutional process facing the magistrate. "I hope the process continues. He has several emblematic cases of people he released who then committed homicides and heinous crimes," Cornejo stated. In this sense, he mentioned cases related to rapes, murders, and the case of police officer Héctor Pelayes, as well as other precedents that, he indicated, are part of the analysis being carried out by the Jury. The governor clarified that judges are not directly responsible for insecurity, but emphasized that their rulings can have an indirect impact when it comes to individuals with violent backgrounds. "We believe that judges must contribute to security issues with their sentences. Judge Sarmiento does not contribute to the security of the people of Mendoza. The process will continue and we will see how it is resolved," he concluded. "They are not directly responsible for insecurity, but they can be indirectly responsible if they release people with antisocial, violent, or homicidal behavior," Cornejo stated. The governor warned that a deficient judicial performance in cases of high severity is "very dangerous" for society, although he stressed that the magistrate has all the guarantees to exercise his defense within the process. "He has every right to defend himself. He has tried to delay the processes, even raising the nullity of his suspension."
