The Maipucina Assembly has called for a peaceful march at kilometer zero in the city of Mendoza at 7 PM. At the same time, the residents of Uspallata will mobilize against the raids and the detention of Mauricio Cornejo for his actions against the San Jorge mine.
Residents of Uspallata have reported the raids and the detention of Mauricio Cornejo, which occurred during the mobilizations against the San Jorge megamining project in the area. Cornejo is recognized for his defense of the residents who were assaulted during previous protests.
In January, a march took place in which Cornejo participated, one of the residents detained on February 24. In addition to the detentions, an attempt at censorship by the police was reported at Radio La Mosquitera when they sought to prevent the screening of the documentary HAM about the fight for water in Mendoza in 2019.
Cornejo's detention occurred in the morning when the Mendoza Police arrested him in the mountain village while he was walking down the street. Eugenia Segura, a member of the Uspallata Self-Convoked Neighbors Assembly, called for solidarity, highlighting the importance of staying united in the face of such situations.
The persecution of environmental defenders adds to similar cases in other provinces, where attempts are being made to repress dissenting voices. According to sources, it is expected that the residents will be charged with the crime of "grouping for ideological coercion" in the coming hours, in an attempt to silence criticisms of the San Jorge mining project.
