The government of Argentina has declared the Mexican Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) a terrorist group, according to a communiqué published this Thursday, March 26, by President Javier Milei's office. “The decision is based on official reports that accredit transnational illicit activities, as well as links with other terrorist organizations,” they describe in a communiqué. The Argentine government ordered the inclusion of the CJNG in the Public Registry of Persons and Entities linked to Acts of Terrorism and its Financing (RePET), dependent on the Ministry of Justice, “within the framework of the international commitments assumed by the Argentine Republic in the matter of combating terrorism and its financing,” they affirmed. Registration in the RePET enables the application of financial sanctions and operational restrictions aimed at limiting the capacity for action of these criminal organizations and their members, while protecting the Argentine financial system from being used for illicit purposes. It also reinforces international cooperation on security and justice, in close coordination with those countries that have already designated that cartel as a terrorist organization. CJNG started as the 'armed wing' of the Sinaloa Cartel. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel is a Mexican organized crime group dedicated to drug and arms trafficking. The criminal organization was created as an armed wing of the Sinaloa Cartel under the name Los Mata Zetas and arose from divisions among various drug trafficking structures following the death in 2010 of Ignacio Coronel, 'alias' Nacho Coronel, one of the leaders of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel (CDS). The founder and leader of the organization, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias El Mencho, died on February 22 during an operation in Tapalpa, 130 kilometers south of Guadalajara, capital of Jalisco. The drug trafficker was one of the most wanted criminals by Mexican and US authorities, with a million-dollar reward for information leading to his capture.
