Argentina Declares Jalisco Cartel a Terrorist Organization

The Office of the President of Argentina, Javier Milei, announced this Thursday morning, March 26, that the National Government has declared the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) a terrorist organization. The official communiqué highlights that 'the CJNG formally emerged in July 2010 after breaking away from the Sinaloa Cartel, and in the last decade has become one of the most powerful drug trafficking organizations in the world, with a presence in Mexico, operations in the United States, and expansion in at least 40 countries, including the Argentine Republic'. The office also notes Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, 'El Mencho', as its leader, although it does mention that he was recently killed in Mexico on February 22. The announced measure is within the framework of 'the international commitments assumed by the Argentine Republic in the fight against terrorism and its financing, and in compliance with current national regulations'. As a result, the National Government has ordered the inclusion of the CJNG in the Public Registry of Persons and Entities linked to Acts of Terrorism and its Financing (RePET), dependent on the Ministry of Justice. This decision, made in coordination between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of National Security, the Ministry of Justice, and the State Intelligence Secretariat, is based on official reports that accredit transnational illicit activities, as well as links to other terrorist organizations. Registration in RePET enables the application of financial sanctions and operational restrictions aimed at limiting the capacity for action of these criminal organizations and their members, while also protecting the Argentine financial system from being used for illicit purposes. 'President Javier G. Milei reaffirms his commitment to the fight against organized crime and terrorism, and maintains the unwavering conviction of recognizing terrorists for what they are, as he has already done with Hamas, with the Cartel of the Suns, with the Muslim Brotherhood, and, most recently, with the Iranian Quds Force'. This measure also 'reinforces international cooperation on security and justice, in close coordination with those countries that have already designated the Jalisco Cartel as a terrorist organization'.
