Argentina Government Releases Controversial Video on Dictatorship

Argentina's government released a video equating state violence to guerrilla actions, featuring testimonies from families on both sides of the conflict.

The Argentine government released a controversial video for the 50th anniversary of the 1976 coup, titled 'Day of Memory for Truth and Justice,' reiterating its official stance of equating state violence with that of 1970s guerrilla organizations. The video, whose teaser was shared on social media last night, features testimonies from a 'recovered grandchild' Miriam Fernández and the son of a colonel, Raúl Larrabure. Miriam Fernández, who was appropriated by a police officer convicted of crimes against humanity, states she lived 'as the daughter of military and as the daughter of the disappeared.' She asserts: 'Let's leave the past in peace, because no one is going to give me my biological family back, and no one is going to give me back the pain I lived with my military family.' Raúl Larrabure, whose father was kidnapped and killed by the People's Revolutionary Army in 1974, describes his father's 'inhumane conditions' in 'people's prisons,' where he endured 'mock executions and torture.' The video claims the 2003 government campaign was a 'biased and vengeful' use of public funds that 'exacerbated past disputes.' The government states it is 'for the first time turning the page by giving visibility to the complete history,' arguing that a 'partial history becomes an instrument of manipulation.'
