Opposition in Argentina Demands Reopening of Negotiations

National deputies and senators from various opposition parties expressed their request for the reopening of negotiations for legislative staff due to the deterioration of purchasing power since the assumption of Javier Milei. The demand is directed exclusively at legislative employees, excluding the salaries of legislators, which are not tied to the agreements made with the Legislative Personnel Association (APL).

In a resolution project, legislators from Unión por la Patria, Encuentro Federal, the Left Front, Democracy Forever, and Federal Innovation requested Martín Menem to reopen the negotiations publicly demanded by the Legislative Personnel Association. They also urged efforts to ensure that legislative employees recover a salary level that guarantees a decent life for them and their families.

The senators from Unión por la Patria, José Mayans, Anabel Fernández Sagasti, Juliana Di Tullio, and Antonio Rodas, presented a letter to Victoria Villarruel with the same terms and text. In the rationale of the project, it was alerted that the accumulated inflation during Milei's administration was 196.48%, while the salary increase for legislative employees barely reached 77.97% in the same period. This salary disparity translates into a serious deterioration of the workers' living standards, which needs to be reversed.

The opposition legislators indicated that any pressure exerted by the Government to keep salaries under control in the national Congress constitutes a violation of the principle of separation of powers. It was emphasized that the parameters of other branches of State should not condition the National Legislative Power, as it would undermine the republican principles established by the Constitution.

Additionally, Menem was reminded that his position as president of the lower house does not grant him the authority to close dialogue with an entity that represents the interests of workers, negatively affecting their living conditions. The signing legislators of the initiative cannot remain indifferent to the loss of purchasing power and quality of life experienced by legislative workers.

The resolution has the signatures of Sergio Palazzo, Vanesa Siley, Carlos Cisneros, German Martínez, Miguel Angel Pichetto, Alejandro Vilca, Mónica Fein, Agustín Domingo, Pablo Juliano, Esteban Paulón, Hugo Yasky, Mario Manrique, José Gómez, and José Carro.
