New Undersecretary of Environment Acknowledges Failures in Fire Prevention

Fernando Jorge Brom, who recently took office as Deputy Secretary of Environment of the Nation, acknowledged that the Government did not act appropriately in preventing the fires in Patagonia. More than 3,400 hectares have already been affected by these fires in the region.

In a statement, Brom described the situation as an "ecological and human disaster" and emphasized the importance of addressing the repair, mitigation, and prevention of such disasters. He also stressed that it is essential to work together with other ministries, such as the Ministry of Security, to tackle this issue.

Regarding reports identifying the Ancestral Mapuche Resistance as responsible for the fires, declared a terrorist organization by the Government, Brom was clear in stating that terrorism must be prosecuted and pursued legally.

The fires continue to spread in areas such as El Bolsón, Mallín Ahogado, and Quillén, while authorities seek strategies to contain the situation and prevent new episodes.

As for the criticisms received by Brom regarding the fire prevention management, the National Government tried to minimize them. Presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni explained that the official's statements were due to his lack of knowledge about public service and management related to fires.

Adorni also clarified that Brom was not yet an officially appointed official and should properly inform himself before making definitive judgments. Brom's formal appointment as Deputy Secretary of Environment will be officially confirmed when it is published in the Official Bulletin.
