Wenceslao Bunge Considered for Argentine Ambassador to Spain

Businessman Wenceslao Bunge has emerged as a possible candidate to occupy the Argentine Embassy in Spain, a position that is vacant due to differences between the Casa Rosada and the government of Pedro Sánchez. Bunge is a businessman and investor, son of the historical spokesperson Alfredo Yabrán. He lived in Spain for several decades and was CEO of Credit Suisse in that country, among other companies.

The possibility of Bunge being appointed as ambassador to Spain gained traction recently during the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) in Madrid, an event attended by the Secretary of Tourism, Environment and Sports, Daniel Scioli. Although Alejandro Alonso Sainz had been chosen for the position in December, the appointment was ultimately revoked in January.

The next Argentine ambassador to Spain will face the challenge of improving relations with Pedro Sánchez's government after tensions that occurred in early 2024. The dispute peaked when Sánchez withdrew his ambassador to Buenos Aires, María Jesús Alonso Jiménez, following controversies caused by offensive statements. Subsequently, Sánchez appointed Joaquín María de Arístegui Laborde to the position.

In this context, the appointment of Wenceslao Bunge as ambassador to Spain is shaping up as an attempt to restore diplomatic relations between Argentina and Spain and pave the way for greater cooperation between the two countries.
