Argentine Municipality Sparks Controversy by Giving Away Cleaning Supplies for Women's Day

The Municipality of Colonia Aurora, in the province of Misiones, celebrated International Women's Day with controversy by giving away buckets, mops, and brooms. "To honor and recognize the fundamental role of women in our community," states the publication on the municipality's Facebook account, where images of Mayor Carlos 'Cali' Goring were shared along with the women who received the 'prizes'. The photos show participants with hair dryers, brooms, buckets, and other cleaning items, which generated criticism online, leading the local official to give explanations. Goring stated in an interview with a local radio station that "sometimes it's the only opportunity for women to leave their homes, come together, and share an afternoon of joy and games". "Those items were related to the games they were playing. They were imitating work. They had to discover what task they were performing," he added, while also stating: "There were over 80 raffles with more gifts for women" at the event held on municipal land.
