Argentine Parents Charged with Infant Abuse

Buenos Aires, March 17 (NA) -- A man and a woman, both 25 years old, were charged with 'grievous bodily harm' caused to their eight-month-old baby, who is their child. Both are in custody, while the minor remains admitted to the Public Maternal and Child Hospital in Salta. According to the Argentine News Agency and as indicated by the Salta Public Prosecutor's Office, the prosecutor for Family and Gender Violence No. 2, Federico Gabriel Portal, pushed for the provisional decision against the couple as presumed authors of a crime that was aggravated by the kinship bond. The investigation began after a complaint was filed by a health professional at the hospital, who pointed out the severity of the clinical picture and the possible incompatibility between the detected injuries and the explanations provided by the parents. The minor was admitted to the medical center on March 5 with a convulsive condition and neurological impairment, which led to her immediate hospitalization in the pediatric intensive care unit, where studies were performed that showed skull trauma, hematomas in various parts of the body, and signs compatible with aggression mechanisms. An interdisciplinary team worked on the investigation and showed the contradiction in the accounts of the accused, both regarding the mechanism of the injuries and the care and living conditions of the girl. In addition, the man was provisionally charged with the crime of coercion against the mother, as he would have exerted pressure and intimidation in a context of family violence.
