Argentinian Unions Protest Labor Reform in Córdoba

Buenos Aires, February 5 (NA) – A group of unions from the CGT, including the UOM, and from the two CTAs mobilized this Thursday in Córdoba to protest against the labor reform bill promoted by President Javier Milei, which will be debated in the Senate next Wednesday. The march went through the streets of the City of Córdoba and reached the Government House of the province, where union leaders targeted the content of the reform and criticized the governors because they understand that, in the majority, they gave the green light to the initiative during recent negotiations they held with the Minister of the Interior, Diego Santilli. In this way, they also added pressure to the CGT leadership, which called for a Board of Directors meeting for this Friday in which they could announce forceful measures, after the dialogue they attempted with the provincial leaders to try to have them on their side and not accompany the reform through the legislators who respond to them failed to materialize. Who marched? The United Metallurgical Workers (UOM), the Association of State Workers (ATE), Oil Workers, Aeronautics and other guilds that make up the United Unions Front (FreSU) again demanded that the governors of all provinces reject the government's initiative because they consider that it 'takes away labor rights'. The head of the UOM, Abel Furlán, stated that 'it is no coincidence that we are here today in Córdoba, which has a very important history in defending the rights of workers. The 'Cordobazo', with the union of workers with the students, and of course that great meeting of workers in Huerta Grande where the program had a reason to be for a free, fair and sovereign nation'. In dialogue with the Argentine News Agency, Hugo Godoy, general secretary of the Autonomous CTA, stated that during the first two years of the La Libertad Avanza (LLA) administration '278,000 formal workers were dismissed' to which is added 'the closure of 21,000 companies'. 'With this bill that Milei is proposing, this process will be deepened. The government's policy is precisely to destroy the industry,' he indicated. What's next? This union front will continue its action plan next Tuesday in Rosario, Santa Fe, where it will hold a similar mobilization to this Thursday's. Meanwhile, on the day the labor reform is debated in the Senate, a national strike with a mobilization to the Congress is planned. 'On Tuesday we will mobilize again in Rosario, and on Wednesday the anger and the decision to resist the labor reform will explode by mobilizing throughout the country, with a national strike. This plan of struggle has a fundamental milestone today here in Córdoba, which is a province that has very important importance for the country's industrial development. The two CTAs and the comrades from the CGT lined up with the UOM and comrade Abel Furlán are determined to maintain this dignity of unity of the class to build a different nation,' added Godoy.
