Police Officer Arrested for Shooting Woman During Psychiatric Crisis

Buenos Aires, February 5 (NA) – A Córdoba police officer was arrested accused of having fired two shots at a woman suffering a psychiatric crisis in the Pueyrredón neighborhood. The officer is a member of the special team 'Recommended Special Tactics Team' (ETER), and is charged with the crimes of serious and aggravated injuries by the use of a firearm, according to local media reports. The victim's relatives contacted 911 to warn that she had barricaded herself in her home and was threatening to harm herself with a bladed weapon. For this reason, officers went to the scene and, failing to convince her to cease her behavior, called the ETER. In this context, an officer shot the victim twice, who suffered injuries to one of her thighs and in the abdomen. The 49-year-old woman was urgently taken to the San Roque Hospital and remained in serious condition. Meanwhile, the Instructional Prosecutor's Office, led by Silvana Fernández, considered that the sergeant of the provincial security force acted outside of legal protocols. The judicial official understands that the implicated officer made a disproportionate use of his regulation weapon when he had less lethal means available in a situation that would not have represented a risk to third parties. IP the Tribunal of Conduct of the Security Forces intervened in the case and investigates the police's administrative responsibility.
