Suicide Risk Group Shifts in Argentina

Argentina, Cordoba. According to a new study, the primary demographic group for suicides has shifted from those over 60 to young adults aged 21 to 30. The report cites "situations of hopelessness due to an uncertain future, challenges such as unemployment, and substance use issues, which have increased in recent years" as the main drivers of these fatal outcomes. Furthermore, it was confirmed that 60% of the cases tested positive for toxicology, with alcohol (42%) and cocaine (21.7%) being the most prevalent substances. Researchers found no link between the COVID-19 pandemic and suicidal behaviors.

"A history of depression is predominant in the profile of people who died by suicide, followed by drug addiction and alcoholism; in third place are other psychiatric pathologies," the report states. The study also revealed a significant role of substance use and drug addiction as risk factors, interacting with a history of depression and other psychiatric disorders, particularly among young men aged 16 to 30.
