Cristina Kirchner Sentenced to Six Years in Prison

The Federal Chamber of Cassation confirmed a six-year sentence for ex-Vice President Cristina Kirchner for fraudulent administration. The verdict, part of the Vialidad case, is being appealed to the Supreme Court.

The ruling issued today reveals a set of government actions aimed at carrying out a maneuver, reaffirming the operation of irregularities. Judges Gustavo Hornos, Mariano Borinsky, and Diego Barroetaveña of Chamber IV of the country's highest federal criminal court signed the lengthy ruling of at least 1,500 pages just before the hearing began. During the hearing, the resolutive part was read, and all parties were subsequently notified electronically.

Regarding former Vice President Cristina Kirchner, the Federal Chamber of Criminal Cassation, by majority vote of judges Borinsky and Barroetaveña, upheld the six-year prison sentence handed down by the Oral Federal Court 2 in the Vialidad case. Despite the prosecution having requested twelve years in prison and the inclusion of the crime of illicit association. In response, the prosecutor in Cassation, Mario Villar, announced that they would appeal to the Supreme Court the acquittal for the charge of illicit association and the acquittals of three defendants, including former minister Julio De Vido, declared by Cassation.

The ruling will not be definitive until the Supreme Court of Justice pronounces. In the minority, Judge Gustavo Hornos voted in favor of accepting the prosecutor's request and increasing the sentence for illicit association. The ruling issued today opens a ten working day period to present extraordinary appeals to the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation.

In addition to Cristina Kirchner, the Federal Chamber of Criminal Cassation confirmed the six-year prison sentences for fraudulent administration against businessman Lázaro Báez, former head of National Road Administration Nelson Periotti, and former Secretary of Public Works José López. It also upheld the acquittal of former minister Julio De Vido and former officials Abel Fatala and Héctor René Garro, among others.

The federal courts in Retiro woke up with a strong police presence and double barricades at their entrances before the reading of the ruling. The hearing took place in the presence of the three judges from Chamber IV of Cassation, some lawyers for the defendants, prosecutor Mario Villar, and a single accused, Abel Fatala. Cristina Kirchner's lawyers, Carlos Beraldi and Ary Llernovoy, communicated their absence to the court and chose to follow the hearing remotely.

While the Vialidad ruling was being read on the ground floor of the courts, the trial of the accused of the assassination attempt on the former Vice President continued in the basement.
