The Chamber of Deputies of Argentina plans to advance in the fight against gambling addiction and online betting, phenomena that have been growing during the pandemic and particularly affect adolescents and young people. The debate on this topic will be held in a plenary session of various legislative committees.
The president of the Commission on Addiction Prevention, Mónica Frade, mentioned that different bills are being analyzed to address this issue. Among them, one promoted by the Civic Coalition along with other parties stands out, proposing stricter measures regarding the advertising and promotion of online gambling.
For its part, the opposition has presented an initiative that prohibits the advertising of online gambling by influencers and celebrities, limiting payment methods and establishing stricter controls, such as biometric identification of users. It also proposes the creation of a national voluntary self-exclusion registry, as well as sanctions for those who violate the regulations.
The objective is to generate consensus among the different political forces to comprehensively address this issue and protect the most vulnerable sectors of society. The signing of resolutions regarding this is expected for Wednesday, after detailed analyses of the projects presented in the relevant committees.
