President Javier Milei renewed his attack on universities, promising audits amid claims of irregularities. The UBA responds, asserting that audits violate their autonomy.

Milei threatens to audit universities in Argentina

President Javier Milei once again attacked universities this Saturday, asserting that "we are going to audit them. The scam in Argentina is over; the castes are over." The libertarian leader referred to the conflict between the University of Buenos Aires and the Government, mentioning that the planned audit would violate the principle of self-governance of educational institutions.

Yesterday, UBA announced that it would bring the matter to court, highlighting the intention of the government to audit as an interference in the autonomy of universities. This situation has generated a clash between the parties, with the Undersecretary of University Policies, Alejandro Álvarez, stating that the universities are "violating" students' rights by refusing to be audited.

Amid these tensions, Milei reiterated that he does not seek to question public universities nor does he intend to privatize them or establish fees. Referring to UBA's resistance to the audit, the president indicated that this reflects possible irregularities: "We all have in our minds that they are dirty, but it seems that they are even dirtier."

In this context, the Government has insisted on the need to clarify the use of funds allocated to educational institutions, arguing that it is crucial to prevent acts of corruption. Milei stated that "people are waking up and realizing that this is the theft of a gang of criminals."

The president also recalled an audit conducted by SIGEN in 2011, which did not reveal significant irregularities, but reiterated his commitment to pursue those who commit illegal acts: "Thieves will not have peace in Argentina because those who do it will pay." In radio statements, he assured that he would seek the responsible for corruption to the last corner of the country and bring them to justice.
