Actor Norman Briski was reported for alleged glorification of terrorism in his speech during the Martín Fierro Film Awards. The complaint, filed by lawyer Alejandro Sánchez Kalbermatten, argues that Briski expressed his support for the people of Gaza with the phrase: 'Gaza will never be defeated.' This statement has been considered as instigation to terrorism, a crime that carries a penalty of two to six years in prison.
During his speech, DAIA issued a statement condemning Briski's words, noting that by praising Hamas, the actor ignores that this terrorist group would act violently against him, being Jewish. Furthermore, various actors, journalists, and leaders expressed their indignation over the actor's statements.
Sánchez Kalbermatten, the reporting lawyer, explained that the glorification of a crime consists of promoting criminal conduct or justifying illegal actions publicly, which has been the case with Briski defending international terrorism before a large audience. This behavior has been deemed criminal and outside the limits of freedom of expression.
In its complaint, DAIA emphasized that Briski's speech does not represent a legitimate exercise of freedom of expression, but constitutes a crime that fosters anti-Semitic hate and undermines democracy. The seriousness of the incident was highlighted as it was broadcasted on all national channels, thus amplifying the effect of his words. The Jewish community expressed its concern over the rise of anti-Semitism in the country and the promotion of discourses that fuel these prejudices.
