The president of the political party La Libertad Avanza, Javier Milei, criticized the functioning of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and compared its management to the situation in Venezuela. Milei expressed his discontent with the re-election of Claudio "Chiqui" Tapia as president of the AFA, which took place in an Ordinary General Assembly that was considered invalid by the General Inspectorate of Justice (IGJ).
In his statements, Milei questioned the handling of the AFA and mentioned that Argentina is a breeding ground for football talents recognized worldwide, but the quality of the local league is harmed by shady practices within the association. He also emphasized the AFA's resistance to the implementation of Sports Anonymous Societies (SAD), maintaining that there should be an opportunity to choose different corporate formats.
Additionally, Milei pointed out the importance of the battle for transparency in Argentine football and expressed his determination to carry out investigations into possible irregularities in the management of the AFA. The political leader stressed the importance of allowing people to choose how to associate and questioned the obstacles present on the path towards greater openness in the sports sector.
Amid the controversy sparked by Tapia's re-election as AFA president, Milei called on the judiciary to analyze the legality of the procedures carried out and assured that he would continue to fight for transparency in the world of football in Argentina.
