The Chubut Legislature approved by a large majority the prohibition of the use of mobile phones and devices within provincial prisons. The objective is to protect public safety and prevent crimes such as scams and extortion. This Thursday night, according to Noticias Argentinas agency, the Chubut Legislature approved the bill that prohibits the use of mobile phones in all provincial penitentiary establishments, and at the same time introduces a controlled connection regime that guarantees the legitimate use of communication respecting human rights. «We cannot allow any person deprived of liberty to continue committing crimes. A prison cannot be a center of clandestine operations. It has to be a place protected by the State and from which crimes cannot continue to be committed,» said Deputy María Andrea Aguilera. In turn, Sonia Cavagnini expressed: «The prison has to be a place of fulfillment, on the one hand, of the sentence, but one must also work for resocialization. The prison cannot in any way become a center of criminal operations».
