Argentine Lawyer Convicted in Brazil Returns Home

Buenos Aires, March 25 (NA) – The defense of Agostina Páez, the Argentine lawyer who spent over two months with an electronic ankle monitor in Brazil accused of racial insult, is holding a press conference to disclose further details of the neighboring country's Justice ruling on the community service tasks the young woman will perform in Argentina. The conference will take place this Wednesday at 9:30 AM at the Argentine Consulate in the city of Rio de Janeiro, the Argentine News Agency (NA) learned through a statement by lawyer Carla Junqueira. This Tuesday, after weeks of waiting, the court convicted Páez for a single instance of racial insult, after determining she made gestures towards a waiter at a bar, but allowed the young woman to return to Argentina, where she must carry out community service. The lawyer's arrival in the province of Santiago del Estero will occur in the coming days after the judge sets the amount of the monetary bail and the procedures for her transfer are completed. "We entered expecting a sentence of at least two years, with effective service in Argentina. But the prosecutor understood that the apology signified that Agostina understood what racism means to Brazil," Junqueira explained upon leaving the court. During the hearing, the prosecution requested that Páez be sentenced to two years in prison, suspended, or alternatively, perform community service in Argentina. After reviewing the case, the judge ruled that the lawyer should return to her country and fulfill the established guidelines.
