Police Violence in Tucumán: 12-Year-Old Girl Detained for Filming Eviction

On February 22, in the Juan XXIII 'La Bombilla' neighborhood in Tucumán, Argentina, a violent eviction operation took place, resulting in several arrests, including a 12-year-old girl. The girl, who dreams of becoming an influencer, was live-streaming the events when police officers rushed at her. Later, the girl's grandmother tearfully demanded her release and stated that her daughter, the girl's mother, was also arrested when she went to the Sixth Police Station to seek explanations about the situation. According to neighbors and relatives, unusual violence was used against the family, who were well-liked in the neighborhood. Neighbors and journalists covering the case managed to bring attention to the repression against the evicted family and then the violence against people who were recording the events, which culminated in the violent detention of the minor and her mother. The girl's mother reported that no eviction order was presented and that no state agencies intervened to protect the rights of a child with autism. The girl was taken to Avellaneda Hospital. This incident questions not only the actions of the security forces but also the limits the state is willing to cross when it comes to those who record and expose institutional violence.
