Buenos Aires, Feb 5 (NA) -- Foreign Minister Pablo Quirnose met this Thursday with Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, recently honored with the Nobel Peace Prize. Machado thanked the government of Javier Milei for their support in the 'democratic cause' of the Caribbean nation. In a post on her social media account X, Machado stated that the meeting addressed 'the situation in Venezuela and the opportunity that a democratic transition offers for guaranteeing security and stability in the region.' Additionally, Machado took the opportunity to reiterate her 'gratitude for the support for the Venezuelan democratic cause from President Javier Milei and for having protected the asylum seekers from our team in his embassy in Caracas for fourteen months, until they were rescued.' According to Noticias Argentinas agency, at the meeting, which also included Argentine Ambassador to Washington Alec Oxenford, 'the demand for the release of all political prisoners, Venezuelan and foreign, who remain held in Venezuela was reiterated.' The opposition leader has established herself in the U.S. capital after receiving the Nobel Prize in Norway, being unable to return to her country despite former President Nicolás Maduro being ousted from his post in early January following a military incursion ordered by Donald Trump.
