United Argentine Workers Prepare to Fight Against Milei's Labor Reform

Coordination meetings of workers and activists are being held across various regions of Argentina to plan joint actions against the labor reform bill. Despite the passivity of major unions, the 'from below' movement is organizing rallies, protests, and preparing for a massive mobilization on the day the reform is debated in Congress. The goal is to defend workers' historical rights and prevent the passage of 'enslaving' legislation.

United Argentine Workers Prepare to Fight Against Milei's Labor Reform

General assemblies of workers and activists from multiple unions and sectors took place across Buenos Aires and its suburbs, characterized by political debate and planning for the fight against the labor reform. These meetings have become points of convergence to deepen coordination among various sectors organizing against the reform. Beyond nuances, the meetings held in the Southern, Northern, Northwest zones and La Plata express a common process: the search for an organized response 'from below' against a labor reform that advances on historical rights, in a context where majority union leaderships are not calling for strike actions. With an agenda that includes awareness-raising days, mobilizations, train protests, and the preparation for a major demonstration when the law is debated in Congress, the union coordination spaces aim to strengthen unity and organization to face the adjustment policies of Milei's government. The initiatives seek to articulate a common plan of struggle against a reform they qualify as 'enslaving,' in a scenario marked by the passivity of the CGT and other union centers, which have so far not called for a general strike or a sustained plan of action. In recent days, meetings have been held in the Southern, Northern, Northwest zones and La Plata, with the participation of state and private sector workers, factories in conflict, hospitals, teachers, railway workers, retirees, and territorial organizations. There was a debate that crossed the meeting around the strategy to face the Labor Reform, reported the union publication Karne de Máquina. According to the same media, participants included SUTEBA Tigre, workers from the Frigorífico Rioplatense, the CICCOP of the Northern Zone, Fate, Madygraf, Mondelez, Caterpillar, BedTime, Atucha, AGD UBA, Hospital Garrahan, INTI, INDEC, Ferroviarixs, Farmacias del Dr. Ahorro, Georgalos, and the FOL, among others. Meeting at Lustramax for the fight against the Labor Reform. Resolutions and activities voted: To surround with support the struggle of the Lustramax workers, strengthen their Struggle Fund and remain on alert for possible evictions. To support the conflicts of Acerías Berisso, Astillero Río Santiago, teachers, and health workers. To organize awareness-raising days against the labor reform, with leafleting, cultural actions, and open radio broadcasts. To participate in regional coordination instances. To demand the CGT and CTA to immediately call a general strike. To massively mobilize when the reform is debated, with the objective of surrounding Congress. Northwest Zone: San Martín and building from below. On January 30, the Coordination Space against the labor reform met at Céfiro Estación Cultural (San Martín), focusing on building a broad, plural reference from below. Resolutions and activities voted: To bet on unity in diversity and overcome apparatus and vanguardist logics. To build a space that accompanies and strengthens local struggles. To go out to the neighborhoods to make visible the rejection of the labor reform. To demand the union centers for a plan of struggle. To participate in the Northern Zone meeting in Lustramax, in the Open Cabildo of Garrahan, and in the anti-fascist mobilization of 2/7. To strengthen communication and call commissions to expand the reach of the space. On 1/31 to participate in the Northern Zone meeting. La Plata-Berisso-Ensenada Coordinator: dissemination, coordination, and demand for a general strike. In La Plata, meetings were also held that resolved an active agenda of dissemination and coordination, with a strong emphasis on the demand for a general strike. Resolutions and activities voted: Dissemination day against the labor reform on Friday, February 6, from 4 PM at Plaza San Martín, with artistic actions and traffic light disruptions. Organization of agitation grids in factories and public bodies. Preparation of a Festival against the Labor Reform. Support for the struggles of Garrahan, Lustramax, and other conflicts. Rejection of the lowering of the age of criminal responsibility and the modification of the Glaciers Law. To demand the CGT and CTA a general strike and mobilization on the day of the law's treatment, in perspective of a general strike. Combative Union Plenary and Garrahan: points of convergence. The different coordinations also decided to participate in two key instances: Combative Union Plenary, held this Monday, February 2, in Parque Lezama. In a context marked by the absence of a general strike called by the CGT and the union centers, which maintain a policy of waiting and negotiation, different union plenaries, regional coordinators, base worker meetings, and social organizations are advancing in the organization of actions, mobilizations, train protests, and the preparation for a major mobilization when the regressive labor reform promoted by the far-right government of Javier Milei is treated in the Senate (possibly, February 11). In all spaces, a common axis was repeated: the need to coordinate actions, deepen unity from below, and demand the union centers for a response commensurate with the attack that the labor reform implies. Southern Zone: regional coordination and action agenda. Image of the 'trainazo' carried out on January 23 at the Constitución station by the organizations of the Southern Coordinator, a measure they will repeat in the following days, facing the treatment of the labor reform. Know the resolutions voted in the meetings held by the southern, northern, northwest zone, and La Plata coordinators, and the common calendar of struggle agreed, with the participation of the Combative Union Plenary of this Monday, February 2, in Parque Lezama and the Open Cabildo in support of the workers of the Garrahan Hospital, which takes place today, Wednesday, 4, given that both spaces are pointed out as points of convergence to deepen the coordination between the different sectors that are organizing against the regressive reform of the national government. While the government of Javier Milei seeks to advance with its labor reform project, which has been revealed that it could begin to be treated possibly on Wednesday, February 11 in the Senate (where it originated), in different points of the Buenos Aires conurbation, plenaries, union meetings, and coordination spaces promoted by base guilds, internal commissions, combative locals, and social organizations have begun to multiply. On Friday, January 30, a meeting of the Southern Zone Coordination against the labor reform was held at the ATE Lomas headquarters, with the participation of about 150 workers and activists from different unions, social and political organizations. Among others, they participated ATE Lomas, ATE Brown, Discas en lucha, Jubiladxs insurgentes, Workers of Secco, Shell and Lustramax in conflict, AGD UBA, FPDS Brown, Front of Organizations in Struggle (FOL), Self-convened of San José and Lanús, United Families of Garrahan, the Orange teachers' list of Avellaneda, the Bordó and Orange railway lists, the Student Center of the University of Avellaneda (UNDAV) and of the National University of Lanús (UNLa), PTS, Socialist Opinion, MST, Mulcs, Marabunta Socialist Left, PSL and Socialist Convergence. Some of the short-term measures agreed were to hold today, Wednesday, 4, a 'trainazo' with leafleting on the way to the mobilization against the Glaciers Law, on Friday 6 to do a leafleting at the Burzaco Industrial Park from 12 to 2:30 PM, and on Saturday 7 to do another 'trainazo' with leafleting on the way to the Anti-Fascist and Anti-Racist mobilization. Resolutions and activities voted: To ratify the policy of unity and regional coordination with all sectors willing to face the labor reform. To point out the distrust in the 'parliamentary wheeling and dealing' and in the leadership of the union centers, which do not call for forceful measures and in some cases negotiate with the employers. To demand a general strike and mobilization on the day the reform is debated in Congress, as part of a plan of struggle. Active solidarity with ongoing conflicts, including line 148, Lustramax, and other sectors in struggle. To promote graffiti, leafleting, trainazos, traffic light disruptions, and awareness days in different districts. To participate in the calls of the Combative Union Plenary (which took place this Monday, February 2, in Parque Lezama) and the Open Cabildo of the Garrahan Hospital (which will take place this Wednesday, 4). To mobilize when the law is debated, with a probable date of February 11. To call a new meeting for next Friday, February 13. Leaflet that the Southern Zone Coordinator will distribute in the trainazos, dissemination, and action days. Northern Zone: Lustramax and solidarity as an axis. On Saturday, January 31, a meeting was held at the gates of Lustramax, convened by the Northern Workers' Space. The plenary took place in a fraternal and combative atmosphere.
