Santilli in Patagonia: Trip Amid Fires and Labor Reform Talks

The Minister of the Interior, Diego Santilli, will travel this Wednesday to areas of Patagonia affected by the wildfires raging in the province of Chubut, as part of his tour of the jurisdictions to gather support for the labor reform. Santilli will tour the affected southern areas alongside the Minister of Security, Alejandra Monteoliva, official sources informed the Noticias Argentinas news agency. For now, the Minister of the Interior has no plans to meet with the governor of Chubut, Ignacio Torres, with whom he met last week to coordinate assistance actions in response to the fires. On Thursday, Santilli will travel to Mendoza to meet with allied Governor Alfredo Cornejo, one of those who anticipated his support for the labor reform and even called for a tougher stance on this initiative. "The reform fell short because I believe that in some points, too much was conceded to the unionism and the CGT," Cornejo stated in an interview with a local media outlet. At 2:00 PM on Friday, it will be the turn of the governor of La Pampa, the Peronist Sergio Ziliotto, whom Santilli was scheduled to see this Tuesday before the provincial governor's flight had to be suspended due to weather conditions in that province. This new rapprochement between the Government and Ziliotto took place within the framework of the new contacts established by the Executive Branch to advance in the search for the necessary votes to pass the labor reform. In this way, Santilli will meet with the Peronist Ziliotto on the eve of the political meeting convened for the same day by the Chief of Staff, Manuel Adorni, at the Casa Rosada. After the days off for officials and lawmakers, the Executive Branch will seek to activate the mechanisms that allow it to notch up a new legislative victory with the passage of the labor reform in February. Milei travels to Paraguay for the signing of the Mercosur-European Union agreement. Some of the key figures appointed by the libertarian leadership for the deployment of the strategy have already made their moves: the head of the senators' bloc, Patricia Bullrich, announced that she will convene a commission, starting next Friday and led by lawyer Josefina Tajes, to discuss and study the objections from sectors proposing alternatives. On January 26, meanwhile, senators will debate the issue with the intention of being able to proceed with the treatment scheduled for the first days of February. The labor reform project is one of the main obsessions of the libertarian administration, which is trying to fine-tune the debate before the start of extraordinary sessions scheduled for Monday, February 2nd.
