The Argentine government has exceptionally and temporarily authorized the entry of 53 Chinese-flagged fishing vessels into the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) with the aim of sheltering from a severe storm affecting the South Atlantic.
The scheduled stay of the Chinese fishing vessels in Argentine waters is approximately four days, subject to the evolution of weather conditions. The permit granted by Argentina is of a humanitarian and maritime security nature and, under no circumstances, authorizes any extractive activities within national jurisdiction.
The request for refuge came after a "Storm Warning" issued by the National Meteorological Service, which alerted to winds of up to 50 knots—over 100 kilometers per hour—and waves of approximately five meters in height in offshore areas. These conditions seriously compromise navigation and the safety of the crews.
From the Executive Branch, it was explained that in the face of extreme weather situations, international practice allows for the controlled and temporary entry of foreign vessels under the principle of "innocent passage".
