UN Extends Golan Peacekeepers' Mandate Unanimously

In a rare show of consensus in the current global landscape, the United Nations Security Council unanimously approved the extension of the mandate for the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in the Golan Heights. The resolution ensures the continued presence of the "blue helmets" in the region for another six months, setting the new deadline for the mission at June 30, 2026. All 15 Council members agreed that the mission's presence is "indispensable" for maintaining the ceasefire between Israel and Syria, preventing escalation on a historically unstable border. The extension comes at a time of extremely high tension in the Middle East, serving as a containment mechanism against the risk of the conflict in Gaza or Lebanon spilling over to other fronts. UNDOF supervises the area of separation and the compliance with the 1974 agreement, being one of the oldest and most strategic peacekeeping missions of the organization.
