Milei Accuses Mercosur Bureaucracy of Inefficiency

Argentina's President Javier Milei sharply criticized the Mercosur bloc at the Foz do Iguazú summit, stating that its bureaucracy prevented the achievement of any of its goals and blaming it for the failure of negotiations with the EU.

During the Mercosur summit in Foz do Iguazú, Argentina's President Javier Milei delivered a sharp critique of the bloc's efficiency and bureaucracy. He stated that none of the key objectives for which Mercosur was created—promoting trade, increasing prosperity, integrating markets, and enhancing competitiveness—have been achieved. Milei blamed the oversized and ineffective bureaucracy for the failure to sign a trade agreement with the European Union, which has been postponed until January 12. The Argentine leader also emphasized the need for a modern, simple, and competitive tariff policy. At the end of his speech, Milei expressed his full support for the United States' pressure on Venezuela and called on other member countries to follow suit. He also reiterated his demand for the release of Argentine gendarme Nahuel Gallo, who has been detained in Venezuela for over a year.
