The Argentine Senate is debating a contentious labor reform. The government and business call for reducing 'labor litigiousness' to create jobs, while unions see it as a threat to their rights.

Argentina Senate Debates Labor Reform

In Argentina, the debate over the labor reform project is advancing in the Senate. The initiative, led by President Javier Milei's coalition 'La Libertad Avanza', aims to address what business leaders call 'litigiosidad' (litigiousness), which they believe hinders the creation of formal jobs. On December 17, the first session of the Labor and Social Security Commission, led by Patricia Bullrich, was held. The Secretary of Labor, Julio Cordero, defended the project, stating that it preserves the 'essential rights of workers' but also 'returns power to the employer.' He emphasized that the reform is designed to be 'modern for SMEs' and for 'workers who want to enter the world of work.' However, the project has faced fierce criticism from major union federations, particularly the General Confederation of Labor (CGT). Unions argue that the reform is not a modernization but a 'labor flexibility' that undermines worker rights. They stated they did not endorse the initiative. As the head of the Argentine Industrial Union (UIA), Martín Rapallini, put it: 'If we do not attack litigiosidad, we are not going to unblock formal employment.'
