Argentine Government Calls for Extraordinary Congressional Sessions

President Milei's government is set to call extraordinary Congressional sessions from Dec 10-31 to debate the 2026 Budget and major reforms, including the Criminal Code and a tax amnesty bill.

Argentine Government Calls for Extraordinary Congressional Sessions

The government of Javier Milei is preparing to convene extraordinary sessions of Congress this Friday through the Official Gazette. This was learned by the Argentine News Agency from legislative sources. The extraordinary sessions will take place from December 10 to 31 of the same month, with a possible extension in February. The goal of the ruling party is to pass the 2026 Budget and the Criminal Code reform in December, while the labor and tax reforms, as well as the Glaciers Act, would be left for February. The interlocutors with Congress are the head of the Chamber of Deputies, Martín Menem, and the head of the libertarian bloc in the Senate, Patricia Bullrich, with the participation of the Minister of the Interior, Diego Santilli. Bullrich has already initiated some exchanges, and Menem is expected to follow suit after securing a legislative minority in the lower house with 95 lawmakers. A similar task is being carried out by the Chief of Staff, Manuel Adorni, accompanied by Santilli in contacts with the 20 governors who signed the May Pact, with the aim of garnering legislative support to pass the second-generation reforms designed by Milei. The government will also seek to approve the “Fiscal Innocence” bill during the extraordinary sessions, which aims to provide certainty for individuals to launder undeclared money from the real economy.

Economic Impact: What the government seeks by encouraging money from the “mattress” to enter the real economy

The initiative, which will be debated alongside the 2026 Budget, was sent to the Chamber of Deputies in June, but the ruling coalition had never put it up for consideration. Now, with the new composition of the body, it seeks to pass the bill as soon as possible to encourage the use of money “hidden” in the mattress. While the priority is the passage of the 2026 Budget bill, La Libertad Avanza (LLA) also wants to include the debate on this project, which is key for using undeclared money in the real economy without persecution from the Tax Collection and Customs Agency.
