Senator Lorena Villaverde Swearing-in Postponed Over Moral Dispute

The senator-elect for Río Negro, Lorena Villaverde, will be sworn in this Friday during a preparatory session, and her diploma will be analyzed again in the Constitutional Affairs Committee, according to the Argentine News Agency from legislative sources. The decision was made by the presidents of the blocks in a Parliamentary Labor meeting, with which the remaining 23 elected senators who have no impugnations will be sworn in this Friday. The Río Negro Peronism presented an impugnation against Villaverde "for moral incapacity" due to the case that the elected legislator had in the United States and for her alleged ties to the extradited businessman accused of drug trafficking Federico "Fred" Machado. With the postponement of Villaverde's swearing-in, La Libertad Avanza will have to define whether it insists on maintaining its position or if, instead, Enzo Fullone will take office. The 24 senators elected in October will be sworn in this Friday: the Villaverde enigma. Therefore, until that is decided, La Libertad Avanza (LLA) will lose a seat since it will have 19 instead of 20, as the officialism proposed. Now, with the new composition of the Senate Chamber, the Constitutional Affairs Committee will have to evaluate her credentials, but it is not known if this will happen in the extraordinary sessions or directly in the ordinary ones that begin on March 1. Legislative sources told the Argentine News Agency that the officialism accepted the request to send the file to committee, due to the resistance of radicals and provincials to support a leader who had a drug case in the United States and for her ties with Machado.
