Crisis in Buenos Aires Province Prisons

The latest report from the Provincial Commission for Memory indicates that there are currently almost 63,000 inmates in the prisons, with an occupancy rate of 116.9% above capacity. Recently, amidst various prison breaks and an increase in detainees, the work of the SPB (Buenos Aires Prison Service) and the authorities regarding the situation in the province's various prisons has been called into question. The Commission, through its monthly reports, stated that in October 2025, there were 62,711 inmates in Buenos Aires prisons, with overcrowding reaching 116.9%. Of that total, only 30,701 have been sentenced, while 28,401 are being prosecuted for various crimes. In October, the SPB held 3,765 female inmates and 102 transgender women. Additionally, there are 63 pregnant women or women with children, while 36 children are housed with their mothers. Regarding deaths in 2025, a total of 188 inmates have died within the prison complexes. The situation is critical, as 2024 ended with 59,497 prisoners, meaning that in eleven months, there was an increase that denotes an acceleration in arrests and a slowdown in the construction of prisons to expand capacity. Buenos Aires, November 16 (NA) -- The prisons of the Buenos Aires Prison Service (SPB) are facing a critical and alarming situation due to the increase in inmates and overcrowding, which demands a rapid response to a bleak outlook.
