The Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation has upheld the 14-and-a-half-year prison sentence for a former mayor from Entre Ríos, who was accused of sexually assaulting and raping several women. The highest court rejected the extraordinary appeal filed by the defense of Angel Constantino, the former mayor of the town of Gilbert, and as a result, the sentence became final. The man, who was already in custody, was formally charged with two counts of 'simple sexual abuse' and three counts of 'sexual abuse with carnal access'. The first complaint of sexual abuse with carnal access was filed in 2018, when he was the Director of Culture in Gilbert, a small town located north of the Gualeguaychú department, while the other two were filed in 2020 and 2021, when he was already the mayor. Constantino denied the accusations at all times and refused to resign, while the residents of Gilbert held marches calling for his suspension or the intervention of the provincial government.
