Argentina's Supreme Court Confirms Life Sentence for Teen's Murder

The Supreme Court of Argentina has left the life sentence for Priscila Zacarías Damaris, alias “Choni”, for the qualified homicide of Leila Aldana Roulín, a 16-year-old teenager, which occurred in 2017 in the town of Romang, Santa Fe.

The incident took place on May 6 of that year, when the victim was stabbed after leaving a place where she had gotten two tattoos with her parents' names. The aggressor was waiting for her with a group of minors between 10 and 15 years old, who were reportedly her relatives and friends. They held the victim by the arms and hair while Zacarías stabbed her.

According to the prosecution, it was a “treacherous, brutal and cowardly attack”, perpetrated “with cruelty and the premeditated participation of two or more people”, in which the accused acted “with assurance”. The teenager died hours later at the Reconquista Hospital from her wounds.

In April 2019, the College of Criminal Judges of the Santa Fe Judicial District sentenced Zacarías to life imprisonment as the perpetrator of qualified homicide. The Vera Court of Appeals aggravated the classification by also considering the existence of cruelty and the participation of two or more people.

The defense filed successive appeals until reaching the Supreme Court of Justice, which has now rejected the plea as inadmissible and left the life sentence firm.
