The government of Javier Milei has announced the start of a process to recover pensions received by former Argentine President Cristina Fernández. The Ministry of Human Capital announced the formal beginning of an administrative procedure to recover funds corresponding to the lifetime allowances received by Fernández in her capacity as former head of state and vice president, and as the widow of a former president. The benefits to Fernández had been suspended at the end of 2024, after she was convicted in a second judicial instance for fraudulent administration to the detriment of the public administration. The ministry stated that the process includes the reimbursement of the amounts provided for by law for the lifetime pensions of former national officials, with their respective interests, and that it will be carried out in accordance with the law. The announcement came two days after a federal court rejected Fernández's request to resume collecting her pension as the widow of former President Néstor Kirchner. The court argued that these pensions are 'graceful' allowances, an exceptional recognition that does not depend on pension contributions.
