Argentinian Politics: System Decay and Disconnect from the People

Argentina's political system is in a state of decay. Politicians see themselves as above the law and the people, leading to high abstention rates and public disillusionment. The author analyzes the current situation, including cases of convicted politicians and the constant shifting of party blocs.

Argentinian Politics: System Decay and Disconnect from the People

Argentinian politics has become a personal exercise where what should be the exception has become the rule. High abstention rates are due to the brutal disconnection between politics and the people. Politicians believe they are a superior caste not obligated to fulfill the mandate they received. Regarding Peronism, one cannot stop talking about the impunity they defend. The only thing we must not stop asking for is respect for citizens. They believe they embody a mission that is above the people; that is why, when they are convicted by the justice system, they believe they deserve special treatment for being Peronist politicians. The Supreme Court confirmed the convictions and disqualification of Guillermo Moreno from holding public office. Immediately, Miguel Ángel Pichetto contacted him to express solidarity and published a text on social networks about it: “In Argentina, as in the rest of Latin America, the supremacy of the judicial power over the other branches of the state and the judicialization of politics advances.” Pichetto, as a good Peronist, believes that politicians belong to a superior caste and should not be judged. Many people believe the adjustment was necessary due to the Kirchnerist disaster. People need to be explained how and when their situation will improve. Argentinian politics only deals with politics itself. Argentinian politics is in a permanent state of boiling, and even more so since the government's victory in the legislative elections. That is why it aligns with governors accustomed to exchange: they support in exchange for something. Political practices in Argentina are at a very low level. In any civilized place, a meeting between a president and a former president is an important event that deserves a press conference to know what they talked about. It seems they did not decide on anything important, and Milei is not the type to open up and make agreements beyond gathering support for his reforms. No one knows why they met or what they talked about. It is a sign of the system's decay to jump from one bloc to another. Politics is broken and there are no signs of re-composition. It has a tribal functioning, and each one answers to the tribe leader, completely forgetting the citizens who put them in those seats with their vote. Regarding the government, the change of Francos for Adorni as Chief of Cabinet is more of the same. While these follies happen, we learn from the news that Macri and Milei met to eat milanesas. Beyond their virtues and defects, Adorni was elected a legislator of the City of Buenos Aires in an election where the LLA list he headed won. Another case where the popular will is mocked for personal convenience. That is all the information. They forget it very often. Also, none of these 'jumping' deputies give a consistent explanation to the people who voted for them. That is another sign of decay, since when a deputy is elected, they are supposed to represent citizens who chose a political sector. It is clearly a violation of the concept of representation, and no one finds it scandalous. One must always remind them that their activity has to do with working for the people. It is hard to find virtuous elements in that boiling. Likewise, they think that CFK should be in prison and even believe that her stay at the San José 1111 spa is something bad and an advance for politics. I think it is irreversible and that we have to build a country with what there is.
