Argentine Minister of the Interior Resigns

Lisandro Catalán has resigned as Argentina's Minister of the Interior. He announced this on Friday night, shortly after Guillermo Francos submitted his resignation as the Chief of Cabinet. Catalán had assumed the position on September 15, serving for just over a month and a half. Francos, in his resignation letter, stated that his decision was due to persistent rumors of changes within the national cabinet. He wanted to allow the new administration to begin its post-election government, following the October 26 national elections, without any constraints. He will be replaced by Manuel Adorni. Catalán, who previously served as Vice Chief of Cabinet with a focus on provincial dialogue, was appointed Minister to improve these very relations. Following the defeat of La Libertad Avanza in the Buenos Aires province elections in September, and deep criticism from provincial governors, the government was compelled to rebuild ties with them. At that time, the Casa Rosada reinstated the Ministry of the Interior and created new dialogue tables: one for policy and another for federal affairs. In a social media post, Catalán announced his resignation from the Ministry of the Interior and pledged to continue supporting this administration and La Libertad Avanza. Catalán was one of Francos's closest allies; they had worked together during Daniel Scioli's governorship in the Province of Buenos Aires and later participated in the Fundación Acodar. During the dialogues with provincial leaders to secure the approval of the Bases Law in Congress, Catalán's role was essential in reaching agreements across the political spectrum, which allowed the government to pass its landmark legislation. The departure of both officials occurs amid the cabinet restructuring pushed by President Javier Milei. One of the final joint activities they shared was the president's summit with governors held this week at Balcarse 50. After 9 PM, the former coordinating minister shared his resignation message. He wrote, 'I am writing to you to present my resignation from the position of Minister of the Interior, which I have had the honor of holding under your leadership,' thanking 'the confidence you have placed in me to begin a stage of dialogue and consensus.'
