CELS Criticizes Police Repression of Protesters in Argentina

The Center for Legal and Social Studies (CELS) has highlighted the importance of the State facilitating conditions for people to exercise their right to protest. Regarding the mobilization the previous day, they reported that a group of people over 70 years old was repressed, resulting in damage to their health. Among the injured in the clashes were Father Paco Oliveira and a journalist who required assistance due to the effects of tear gas.

"Protesting is one of the most important rights of democracy," said CELS, noting that even retirees could not enter Congress to share their situation. Following the mobilization on March 12, which concluded with 114 arrests and dozens of injuries, including an incident in which an officer struck a photographer who remains hospitalized, CELS described the actions of the law enforcement as "repression" under the orders of Minister Bullrich.

The organization has repeatedly criticized the actions of the National Security Ministry during the usual marches of retirees, stating that the austerity policies promoted by the National Government expose the lives of those seeking to be heard. They pointed out that repressing the right to protest is illegal and unconstitutional, emphasizing that protest is a fundamental right, not a threat.

CELS has condemned the stance of Minister Bullrich, who previously announced her intention to repress the demonstrations.
