The union secretary of the Union of Automotive Tramway (UTA), Gabriel Gusso, has declared that if they do not receive the demanded amount of "two and a half million pesos" for the drivers, they will initiate an indefinite strike. The internal union dispute became evident when the union disavowed Gusso as spokesperson shortly after his statements.
In conversation with Noticias Argentinas, Gusso urged UTA president Roberto Fernández to meet the salary demand by ensuring payment is made. He also emphasized that they no longer want more promises from the National Government and that the bases are requesting an action plan that will begin with an assembly.
In support of the cause, the drivers of line 148 held a protest at Puente Saavedra starting at 1:30 PM. Gusso emphasized the need for transport workers to receive the salary they are entitled to and stressed that they do not want to discuss subsidies or fares, as this would delay their current demand.
Additionally, he highlighted the importance of preventing drivers from being forced to have two jobs to make ends meet, putting their safety and that of passengers at risk. Gusso underscored the responsibility that comes with drivers' work behind the wheel and mentioned that as a union, they must guarantee decent conditions that do not compromise their performance.
In this regard, the union representative stated that they will continue without going back on their salary demand, aware of the repercussions that would imply that drivers perform with fatigue at the wheel, thereby avoiding possible accidents.
