Justice Restores Tribute to Judge Jorge Quiroga

The Argentine judiciary has decided to restore a plaque in memory of Judge Jorge Quiroga, who was assassinated in 1974. This decision comes after a request from the Association of Lawyers for Justice and Concord, marking a significant moment in Argentina's historical memory.

Justice has made an important decision in the context of restoring historical memory by ordering the reinstatement of a plaque honoring Judge Jorge Quiroga, a member of the Federal Criminal Chamber. Quiroga was responsible for prosecuting and convicting terrorists between 1971 and 1973, and he was murdered by the People's Revolutionary Army (ERP) in April 1974. The National Criminal and Correctional Appeals Chamber of the Federal Capital has accepted the request to replace the plaque presented by the associations of Lawyers for Justice and Concord, and of Victims of Terrorism in Argentina.

The plaque honoring Quiroga was removed in 2012 during the management of Gustavo Bruzzone, who was presiding over the body at that time. This action took place in a context of ideological changes driven by kirchnerism. However, with the current decision of the Chamber, this recognition is restored at the entrance of the court building. The current president of the Chamber, Mariano Alberto Scotto, and the vice presidents Juan Esteban Cicciaro and Rodolfo Pociello Argerich, supported the reinstatement of the plaque arguing that the murder of Quiroga, which occurred during a constitutional government, is a significant event in the history of the country.

"The fact that Quiroga lost his life as a result of his position as a judge justified keeping the reminder of someone who was a magistrate of the mentioned court for almost a decade," Cicciaro stated. This decision is also based on the historical sequence that explains the subsequent events, as recognized by the National Criminal and Correctional Appeals Chamber in case No. 13 that convicted several members of the military juntas.

The Chamber has also approved another request to install a memorial plaque in honor of Dr. Carmen María Argibay and to apply the "Procedure for the Guard and Conservation of Historical Documents" to the files of Judge Quiroga and Dr. Argibay. This act seeks to keep alive the memory of relevant figures who have been part of Argentina's judicial history.
