Argentina Advances on IMF Agreement

The Argentine government has secured a key ruling to advance the discussion of a new agreement with the IMF. The proposed decree aims to stabilize the economy and avoid further debt increases, a significant development under President Javier Milei's administration.

Argentina Advances on IMF Agreement

The Government today achieved the ruling to enable the discussion of DNU 179/25, which authorizes it to close a new agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The administration of President Javier Milei submitted the decree last week and intended for it to be reviewed and approved quickly by the Bicameral Commission of Legislative Procedure last Thursday. However, it did not have the nine signatures needed out of a total of 16 to safeguard the DNU. It obtained them at the beginning of this week and managed to unlock the ruling. This allowed the Casa Rosada to have an encouraging outlook for securing the agreement in the Chamber of Deputies.

Those who provided their signature in favor of the ruling were various legislators, including the libertarians Juan Carlos Pagotto and Lisandro Almirón, Diego Santilli and Luis Juez from PRO, Víctor Zimmerman and Francisco Monti from UCR, Carlos Espíndola from Las Provincias Unidas, and Oscar Zago from MID. After overcoming this obstacle, it is expected that the negotiation with the IMF will take place without increasing the debt and providing essential support for reducing inflation.

During the day, there were a series of back-and-forths with senators and deputies, highlighting Paoltroni's involvement in the renewal of the commission's authorities. In a gesture that surprised many, Paoltroni managed to have Zago elected president of Legislative Procedure, in an act that represented a severe blow to Kirchnerism.

In summary, the day was marked by important steps toward negotiating a new agreement with the IMF, focusing on economic stabilization and reducing inflation in Argentina.
