The president of the Justicialist Party, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, has urgently called for an extraordinary meeting of the National Federal Council of the organization to define the party's position regarding the upcoming session of the Chamber of Deputies, where the Urgent and Necessity Decree 179/2025 will be addressed, which empowers the Government to negotiate and finalize an agreement with the International Monetary Fund.
The session in the Chamber of Deputies, convened by the ruling party and its allies, is scheduled for Wednesday, March 19. The reason for the Justicialist call is to try to prevent what they consider an attempt to undermine the powers of the Legislative Branch by the Government, advancing unilaterally in an agreement with the IMF without disclosing the details of it. The PJ seeks to establish a unified position on this matter.
In addition, a request has been made to convene a bicameral Legislative Procedure one day before the session in Deputies, with the aim of discussing the same decree. This commission, led by a libertarian senator, aims to obtain relevant information for the legislative debate on the agreement, with the participation of authorities such as the Vice President of the Central Bank (BCRA), the Secretary of Economic Policy of the Ministry of Economy, and the Argentine representative to the IMF.
The Urgent and Necessity Decree 179/2025, which authorizes the agreement with the IMF, is already official; however, it does not provide crucial information such as the amount of the agreement, its deadlines, or the goals negotiated with the organization. The session of the Chamber of Deputies will generate expectations regarding the discussion of this "fine print" of the decree and the position that the Justicialist Party will adopt in this regard.
