Senators Seek Special Session to Reject Supreme Court Nominees

The Peronist interblock in the Senate has requested a special session for next Thursday with the aim of annulling the nominations of Manuel García-Mansilla and Ariel Lijo, candidates for the Supreme Court. The main justification for this request is based on the fact that both candidates were appointed by presidential decree without the support of the upper house, which Peronism considers a clear violation of the National Constitution.

The decision to call for this special session was communicated by Senator José Mayans, leader of the Kirchnerist interblock, after a favorable opinion for García-Mansilla was obtained in the Agreements Committee. The senator from Unión por la Patria for Mendoza, Anabel Fernández Sagasti, who also was part of the committee, expressed her stance ensuring that it is imperative to defend the Constitution and criticized the ethics and morals of the Supreme Court candidates.

Mayans emphasized that the appointment of judges by decree from President Javier Milei constitutes a violation of the National Constitution and that it is crucial to establish limits. Despite having a favorable opinion for Lijo, Peronism maintains its rejection of both nominations due to their decree-based appointment, warning about possible future appointments in lower judicial instances.

Senator Mayans stated that the appointment of García-Mansilla is null and that an opinion will be brought to the chamber next week to reject the nominations to the Supreme Court. Peronism has promoted a dissenting opinion on García-Mansilla, equivalent in practice to a rejection.
