Senator Calls IMF Agreement a 'Coup in Democracy'

National senator Martín Doñate, from Unión por la Patria, strongly criticized the recent executive decree authorizing a new agreement with the IMF, describing it as a "coup d'état in democracy." In his message, Doñate stated that his bench will not recognize "this scoundrel debt."

In response to decree 179/2025 published in the Official Gazette, the senator expressed that President Javier Milei and his Cabinet are involved in what he called a "true crime of constitutional lineage." According to Doñate, this step by the government demonstrates desperation, pointing out that the decree exposes that if the IMF does not provide money, the government will collapse.

Doñate emphasized that this debt is illegitimate, fraudulent, and scoundrel, and that the Argentine people should not suffer the consequences of the deals of a few privileged individuals. He believes that the IMF is also co-responsible for the situation and highlighted that the opposition in Argentina will disregard this financial coup.

The senator mentioned Law 27.612 on Strengthening Public Debt Sustainability, which establishes that any agreement with the IMF must be expressly approved by Congress. For Doñate, this new indebtedness only benefits an elite and harms the Argentine people.

In his criticisms, Doñate linked the cycle of indebtedness to the economic situation of the country and the influence of actors such as Caputo and his associates. He warns that if this process is not stopped, the Republic will be undermined and plunged into an unprecedented institutional crisis.
