Controversy Over Supreme Court Nominations in Argentina

The Radical Civic Union opposed the nominations of judges Lijo and García Mansilla, seeking to gather the necessary signatures for rejection in the Senate. A political battle is ongoing as they push against government appointments.

Controversy Over Supreme Court Nominations in Argentina

The La Libertad Avanza bloc did not issue a favorable report on the candidacy of judges Ariell Lijo and Manuel García-Mansilla for the Supreme Court. According to the Radicals, no document has been seen with the sufficient number of signatures to support García-Mansilla. A total of nine signatures is required to enable the examination of the appointments in the coming days. On the other hand, the opposition seeks to request a special session in the Senate to reject the nominations.

In statements from the news agency, it was revealed that the Radical bloc agreed to reject the nominations of Lijo and García-Mansilla during an internal meeting. However, Senator Eduardo Vischi, aligned with the government of Javier Milei, pressured to avoid signing the report. So far, no supporting report for García-Mansilla has been presented in the Agreements Commission by the opposition blocs in the Senate.

Senators Martín Lousteau and Guadalupe Tagliaferri presented a rejection report for the candidacy of judge García Mansilla, while Union por la Patria submitted its own with six additional signatures, accumulating a total of eight signatures, one signature short of the total needed to begin the examination. In the hands of Mariana Juri, Maximiliano Abad, and Carolina Losada, members of the Agreements Commission, lies the possibility of facilitating the rejection of the nominations.

From the Supreme Court, García Mansilla has been sworn in based on decree 137/2025, while Ariel Lijo's request for leave was rejected, which could force him to resign from his position if he seeks to assume in the Supreme Court. These events have generated concern in the libertarian administration, which seeks to prevent the opposition from stopping García Mansilla's appointment to the Supreme Court. The opposition blocs hope to elevate a petition to the Vice President of the Senate, Victoria Villarruel, to enable the examination that allows for the rejection of both nominations.
